Plasma Surface Engineering Laboratory

Plasma Surface Engineering Laboratory (PSE) is part of the Plasma Physics and Nuclear Fusion Department in the National Institute for Laser, Plasma and Radiation Physics Bucharest-Magurele. The group is mainly involved in research projects funded by the Romanian Ministry of Education and Research and by the European Commission under EUROfusion program.

A new technology (Combined Magnetron Sputtering and Ion Implantation – CMSII) has been developed and successfully applied for tungsten coating of carbon based materials for the first wall in the nuclear fusion devices. We have been involved in R&D activities with groups from JET (Joint European Torus) Culham, AUG (Asdex Upgrade Tokamak) Garching and KStar (Korea Superconducting Tokamak Advanced Research).

Besides the research activities the group provides coating services to end-users on commercial basis. We have a large expertise (processes and equipment) in the plasma technologies for surface treatments such as plasma nitriding and thin films deposition by PVD technique. Specific plasma equipment has been manufactured under our supervision and exported to customers from UK, France, Zimbabwe, etc.

The group is certified in accordance with ISO 2001 and ISO 14001 standards.
